Preparatory language courses

The German Norwegian Study Centre, the Lektorat Deutsch als Fremdsprache and the International Center of Kiel university offer a German language course each September. This course specifically caters for exchange students who are about to study abroad (in Germany) for a semester.

Group of participants

The course is geared towards Norwegians as well as other foreign students who intend to study in Kiel or any other German university during the following winter semester, and who want to prepare themselves for the everyday student life ahead.

Lessons

Lessons are comprised of 18 – 20 hours per week and beginners and advanced classes are offered for different competency levels.

Level 1: Students without previous knowledge

For students who want to take an English master degree and who want to acquire essential knowledge for everyday life in Germany.

Level 2 & 3: Students with previous knowledge

For students who have already acquired some basic knowledge in German. The students will be divided into two groups of different competency levels after a preliminary test. The contents of these German courses comply with the requirements of potential studies at a German university at a later date. The main focus of the classes is to apply your language skills in conversations.  The aim of the classes is to prepare the students for daily student life in Germany. Other aspects of the classes will involve regional and intercultural fields of study, to alleviate the first steps into the new environment and to deepen the student’s knowledge of Germany’s culture, history and politics.

Classes will be held at the “Lektorat Deutsch als Fremdsprache” at Kiel university. The “Lektorat Deutsch als Fremdsprache” has been offering German classes for foreign students, who want to study in Germany, for over 50 years. This is why the “Lektorat” has a great wealth of experience in language teaching and is able to prepare foreign students purposefully in regard to the requirements needed for studying in Germany.

Study module for Norwegian course participants

An additional contrastive module is offered for Norwegian students (1-2 afternoons per week) which refer to particularities of/ in the language as well as everyday culture. To take part in this module, a basic knowledge of the German language is required.

Assessment and certificate

The course participants will receive a certificate of attendance as well as 6 ECTS-points, provided they attend classes regularly and pass the written final exam.

Social programme and leisure time

Aside from classes, a varied social programme is offered. The students will partake in a city tour of Kiel, two day trips to Lübeck and Hamburg, a visit to the radio and tv station NDR and to the parliament of Schleswig Holstein as well to the theatre, to get a good idea of northern Germany, its history, landscape, art and culture. Social evenings, a welcome and a goodbye dinner and possibly a barbecue (depending on the weather) are meant to provide opportunities for the students to meet new people, make friends and use their German skills.

Kiel, the capital of Schleswig Holstein, is situated directly by the sea and offers a variety of attractive free time activities, such as concerts, museums, shopping and student bars. There is also an extensive amount of sports activities like water sports (sailing, surfing, swimming), cycling, and inline skating or fitness classes at the university’s own gym.
